Directed by Nick Cassavetes from a screenplay by newcomer Melissa Stack, The Other Woman stars Cameron Diaz as Carly, a glamorous New York lawyer who learns that her boyfriend Mark (Nikolai Coster-Waldau) is married, and teams up with his wife Kate (Leslie Mann) to get revenge on the two-timing bastard.

Of the pair, it’s Kate, the supposedly meek homemaker, who proves to be the livewire. From the moment she shows up at Carly’s minimalist-chic apartment with Great Dane in tow, she comes off as a classic screwball heroine, with a knack for explaining insane arguments in patient, reasonable tones. Though wiped out emotionally by Mark’s betrayal, she can’t see anything wrong with befriending his mistress: who else can truly understand her predicament?

Subsequent plot twists aren’t as zany as might be hoped, but for quite a while the film is able to coast on the camaraderie between its stars. Eventually we meet yet another of Mark’s lovers, the much younger Amber, played by Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton. Though she doesn’t have much to do except stand round while her new friends crack jokes about her breasts, she’s a welcome addition to the team.

This is a chick flick with all the trimmings: falling-down-drunk gags, montages backed by 1980s pop songs, desirable beachfront real estate. Consistency is not a priority: the tone is raw and cartoonish by turns. There are some awful, gross sequences, including one involving a transvestite that any sensible editor would have cut. But there’s also a winning element of surrealism, exemplified by the bizarre presence of Nicki Minaj as Carly’s secretary, spouting aphorisms like “Selfish people live longer”.
